What is Moringa? The Leaf at the Heart of Our Drinks

Zogale, ewe igbale, okwe oyibo: moringa goes by many names in Nigeria. Here is what it is and why we build our fruit drinks around it.

If you grew up in northern Nigeria, you may know moringa as zogale, tossed with kuli-kuli and onions. Elsewhere you may have heard it called ewe igbale or okwe oyibo. Names vary from place to place, but the tree is easy to recognise: slender branches, small rounded leaves and long seed pods.

A tree that thrives in warm places

Moringa oleifera is native to South Asia and is now grown widely across the tropics, including much of Nigeria. It grows quickly, copes well with heat and dry spells, and its leaves, pods and seeds are all used as food in different parts of the world.

Why people value the leaves

Moringa leaves are the part most often eaten. Laboratory analyses report that they contain vitamins, minerals and amino acids, which is why the plant has such a strong reputation as a food. The amounts vary with soil, season and processing.

How we use it

Every Wellnessbev fruit drink is made with moringa extract, together with fruit, essential vitamins and zinc. We chose moringa because it belongs here: a familiar Nigerian plant, used in a modern drink that tastes good first.
